June 2018

June 25, 2018

Just over a week ago I was honored to attend both the North Kitsap High School and Kingston High School graduations.  As I watched
432 proud and elated graduates cross the stage, and as I looked out at the crowd of smiling families, friends, and faculty of those graduates, I was reminded that it truly takes a village full of caring and dedicated people to help these students reach this milestone.

During this school year, I had the privilege of visiting every single classroom in the school district.  Over and over, I witnessed students highly engaged in their education, incredible teachers providing instruction, and staff at every turn supporting our students with extraordinary care.  These visits provedthat exceptional educational experiences don’t just happen... they happen because of the intentional, caring work of hundreds of NKSD employees.  From updates throughout the year, you’ve learned about the many highlights in our classrooms. Today, I want to focus on the numerous daily, routine things that ultimately contribute to those special learning moments and the successful graduation of our students. And so, here’s a glimpse of NKSD “by the numbers” for the 2017-2018 year:

  • Our food service team provided 466,054 meals.
  • Our custodians and maintenance teams kept one million square feet of building space clean and healthy for use by our students, staff and community.
  • Our grounds team maintained over 300 acres of land.
  • Our buses transported students728,000 miles to and from school.  That’s enough for a trip to the moon and back!
  • Our students went on over 700 field trips, exploring their world and benefitting from unique learning experiences.
  • Our faculty taught approximately 6 million lessons (or segments of instruction) to 5885 students.

The graduates who received their diplomas are the beneficiaries of these daily contributions by the staff and faculty of NKSD. Our graduates will leave their time in North Kitsap with the knowledge and experiences to guide them into the future, and they leave having made hundreds of fond memories. And while we can measure many things, the experiences and memories that our graduates now possess are truly priceless and immeasurable.

As our students, families, and school staff head home for summer, our Student Support Center team and our maintenance department teams are gearing up for a very busy summer of work. That’s right - we are already preparing our schools and systems for the 2018-2019 school year! Many of our faculty will be learning new skills by attending professional development in July and August. Our maintenance and custodial teams will undertake repairs and prepare our schools and our grounds for a new year.  Staff at the Student Support Center will be preparing reports, working on enrollment, interviewing candidates, planning to welcome new teachers/staff, and planning logistics for 2018-2019.  Furthermore, thanks to our voters, we will also be working hard on a handful of capital projects!

Thank you all for supporting our students in North Kitsap. I am deeply appreciative of our community, families, faculty and staff – you all make a difference in our students’ lives. We are fortunate to live and learn in a place that values education and values its schools. Enjoy summer, and see you in the fall!
