Welcome back!  This summer has been filled with some beautiful Pacific Northwest weather, and I hope you and your families have had time to enjoy it.  Here in North Kitsap School District, we have been busy throughout the summer preparing our schools and staff for what will be a fantastic year.

The 2016-17 school year is a very important one for our school district.  When we launched our Strategic Plan in 2014, we set two critical priorities:  1) All third graders will be reading on grade level by 2020; and 2) We will be in the top 5% of schools in graduation rate in the state by 2020.

This year’s Kindergarten class will be third graders in 2020.  The work that our teachers, support staff and administrators have done for the past few years has never been more important.  We have seen growth each year towards this goal and look forward to fulfilling this promise.  Studies show that if a child can read on grade level in third grade, they are much more likely to be successful in high school and beyond.

Speaking of high school, this year’s Freshman class will be the graduating class of 2020.  We have seen graduation rates in North Kitsap climb 6.6% in the past four years to 85.9%.  Our graduation rate is currently 7.8% higher than the state.

Every student in North Kitsap is our priority.  We believe that every one of them can succeed.  The work we do each and every day is guided by this belief.  Our outstanding teachers and support staff work tirelessly to provide excellent learning opportunities for every student.

My hope is that you will join us in helping each and every student succeed by volunteering in our schools, reading to your child, joining an advisory committee, attending a meeting, or simply sharing a positive story about our schools.

I look forward to sharing the successes and great things happening in our schools throughout the coming year.

Here’s to a great school year.
