Two short years ago, Suquamish Elementary staff embarked on a journey to build a strong foundation for lifelong student success by instilling and reinforcing

academic behaviors and higher-level thinking with every student. A group 20 staff members attended the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Summer institute in 2018 where they learned strategies in equity, teacher effectiveness, leadership and student success.

After the institute, they immediately brought what they learned back to the school and began the transformational work.

This culture is evident as soon as you walk into Suquamish Elementary.  College banners and t-shirts fly proudly in the hallways. Students in every classroom are connecting with their learning in a meaningful way.  Learning is happening in a way that ensures every student has access in a way that makes sense to them. Every student sees the potential in their future.

Last month, teachers and administrators from around the region came to Suquamish Elementary to see AVID in action at the AVID Showcase.  Principal Gwen Lyon shared data about the school and some of the tools and strategies they use to identify individual student needs. Teachers and students shared the positive impact the implementation has had on the school. Visitors toured classrooms to view student work, observe classroom discussions, and engage in the learning that happens each day.
