End of Year Update

Dear North Kitsap Community,

As I’m writing this letter to you, our students and most of our staff are beginning their well-deserved summer holidays. However, things at the Student Support Center are very busy! We are working hard to put plans in place and ensure that we are ready for everyone to return to school on Wednesday, September 4th! Speaking of which, if you have not done so yet, please be sure to check-in your student online. This helps us ensure that we have teachers assigned properly for our students as well as to ensure we are ready to welcome all students at the start of the year. Thank you!

Strategic Plan

I’d like to start off with some exciting news. The school board approved the new NKSD Strategic Plan at the June 27th board meeting! The strategic plan is the guiding document by which we will frame all of our work and decisions in NKSD. This new plan is the culmination of many months of work by students, staff, parents, and community members. We involved as many individuals in this process as possible. We held two community-wide forums, we spent a full day on a listening tour with students at all grade levels, and we held a number of meetings with our Alignment Team (community leaders) and our Core Team (the group tasked with creating the plan). I would like to publicly thank our community leaders who participated in the Alignment Team, as well as the nearly 80 staff, students, parents, and community members who were members of the Core Team. Their hard work will help us chart a course for success in the future. I will be sharing updates and more information about how we will implement this plan as we begin the 2019-2020 school year.

Budget Update

I shared updates in prior blog posts throughout the spring and we have provided updates at school board meetings as well regarding our challenging budget situation. In February, I shared that we anticipated a $4 million shortfall. We then made very difficult decisions about how we would meet the decrease in revenue and decreased enrollment that we are facing for the 2019-2020 academic year. In April, we identified $3 million in reductions in NKSD to “close the gap” and produce a balanced budget. That said, there is a silver lining to this challenging situation. Originally, we were projecting close to a $4 million shortfall, and we were preparing to make additional reductions and adjustments to present a balanced budget. However, due to increased revenues in some key program areas, the shortfall is now closer to the $3 million mark. This means that we will not have to make any additional reductions beyond the ones we have made to date. We are working very hard to ensure student and staff needs are met in the coming year despite the reductions we have had to make.

Summer Projects

As I mentioned in the opening of this letter, this summer is a busy time for our district leadership, technology teams, and our maintenance crews as we diligently work to prepare our systems and structures to welcome back students and staff in late August. Thanks to the support of our voters, we have a host of capital projects that are underway in addition to regular annual maintenance work at all school sites. Our technology team is hard at work deploying new computers to schools as well as completing much needed infrastructure upgrades. We are also hosting critical training sessions for teachers and staff, working to onboard new team members, and ensuring we have plans in place to meet the needs of all incoming students.

In closing, I want to thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and schools. Schools cannot do it alone. Your active participation and support helps us help all students. Thank you for all that you do to support our work in NKSD!

In partnership,

Dr. Laurynn Evans
